he Steelers have used black and gold as their colors since the club's inception, the lone exception being the 1943 season when they merged with the Philadelphia Eagles and formed the "Steagles"; the team's colors at that time were green and white as a result of wearing Eagles uniforms. Originally, the team wore solid gold-colored helmets and black jerseys. Unique to Pittsburgh[citation needed], the Steelers' black and gold colors are now shared by all major professional teams in the city, including the Pittsburgh Pirates in baseball and the Pittsburgh Penguins in hockey, and also the Pittsburgh Power of the reformed Arena Football League, and the Pittsburgh Passion of the Independent Women's Football League. However, the Penguins currently use "Vegas Gold", a color similar to metallic gold, and the Pirates' gold is a darker mustard yellow-gold, while the Steelers "gold" is more of a bright canary yellow. Black and gold are also the colors of the city's official flag.

The Pirates were the first team in Pittsburgh to use the black & gold color scheme, basing their colors around the Flag of Pittsburgh's colors. Decades after the team folded, the colors have become the team colors of all three of Pittsburgh's major sports teams. However, during the team's existence, they would be the only team in the city with the colors, as the baseball team of the same name, like all other baseball teams at the time, had a more patriotic red, white, and blue color scheme and wouldn't adopt black & gold until 1948. The NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers were not in existence until 1933, three years after the team left town and two years after the franchise folded altogether.
The Pirates would later have a connection with Pittsburgh's next NHL franchise; the Pittsburgh Penguins used the Pirates as an example of a team other than the Boston Bruins using the black & gold color scheme when the Bruins protested to the NHL over the Penguins change in team colors in January 1980. The NHL allowed the Penguins to change their colors as a result of the Pirates using these colors.

Hay wut up Taylor gang I grow up in Pittsburgh when I was kid and I can used ride around with my older brothers and we be listening to Wiz Khalifa the Taylor Gang. They used to run the city known everwhere in steel city. Running the city taken over know one can stop the the star team. I would go to Kennywood Park with friends as kid and we be listening to the Plane and all other hits. Putting on for are city with every thing Black & Yellow bicths loveing it. That wut is so carzy there made song about it and know am in Ohio liveing still whereing Black & Yellow in Akron Ohio putting on for my city change akron ohio to all steel city fans where taken over out here in akron you should have concert out here at are lock 3 downtown and see all fans you have out here it's crazy. College Kids that go Akron Unversity out here would go crazy to see you live. You would get made loveings out here. I just started cleaning job at PNC Building out here in downtown akron same one in Pittsburgh PNC is everywhere around here.
